International Standard Book Number (ISBN)
The ISBN is a unique machine-readable identification number and cataloging number for books, which marks them unmistakably. For 30 years the ISBN has revolutionized the international book-trade. It is based on an ISO International Standard that was first published in 1972 as ISO 2108. Guidelines are drafted by a subgroup of the ISO committee (ISO/TC46/SC9/WG4).

Group is 1-3 digits.
Publisher is 2-7 digits.
Title is 2-7 digits.
Total must be 10 digits for now.


The ISBN will be updated to a 13-digit on 1st January 2007.

International Standard Serials Number (ISSN)
A cataloging system to identify serial publications (journals, newspapers).
Serial Item and Contribution Identifier (SICI) augments the ISSN in order to identify individual issues of serial publications, or components within those issues (such as an individual article, or the table of contents of a given issue).
The ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) is an eight-digit code assigned and administered by the ISSN International Center.

CODEN (CODEN)
The CODEN is a unique serial and nonserial identifier consisting of six characters and assigned by the Chemical Abstracts Service of the American Chemical Society, but it is not limited to chemical publications. Each CODEN consists of four mnemonic letters and a fifth letter, A-F. The 6th character is a calculated check character which can be alphabetic (A-Z) or numeric (0-9). It is used to identify and eliminate typographical errors.

A Request for Comments (RFC) in the Internet Community under the The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)
A system for Uniform Resource Names (URNs) must be capable of supporting identifiers from existing widely-used naming systems. RFC 2288 discusses how three major bibliographic identifiers (the ISBN, ISSN and SICI) can be supported within the URN framework and the currently proposed syntax for URNs.
